"I love seeing the community come together," Beth Reed said Saturday morning, watching neighbors line East Highway 45 for the Athol Daze parade. Kids scrambled for candy under a hazy, smoke-tinged sunrise. Preston Clark rode past with his dad in a classic Ford Model. George "Hollywood" Zick jogged the route pushing a modified grocery cart on two wheels, which is either the most Athol sentence ever written or close to it.
None of that is new. Athol Daze has opened with a pancake breakfast and closed with a cake walk for well over a century. What's new is everything happening around the parade route this year, close enough that you could see all of it in one afternoon.
For most of Silverwood's history, Athol's relationship with its own biggest attraction has been an odd one. Hundreds of thousands of visitors a year drive straight through town to reach the park, then keep going, north toward Sandpoint or back south toward Coeur d'Alene. Developer Kelvin Shin ran into that gap directly when he started scouting land across the highway from Silverwood's entrance. "When I came back, I noticed we have no lodging here," he told Hagadone News Network about the moment he decided North Idaho needed cabin-style stays near the park.
The scale of that gap is worth sitting with for a second. Athol's population was 709 at the last census. Silverwood alone brings on close to 1,600 seasonal workers from Kootenai and Bonner counties every summer, according to Prism News coverage of the park's recent ownership change. The park's own summer staff outnumbers the town's year-round population more than two to one. Until recently, almost none of the visitors who created that need for staff had a reason to spend the night in Athol itself.
Shin's answer is called BumbleBee Travel Center, a $13.5 million project going up in phases on 10 acres at 6067 E. Bunco Road, just south of Silverwood's entrance. Phase one wrapped last year: an 8,300-square-foot convenience store and a 76-brand gas station, plus a restaurant space still waiting on a tenant, according to the Tri-Cities Area Journal of Business.
Phase two is what's been under construction this year:
Shin has framed the project as more than a stopover for park guests, something built for the town rather than just around it. Whether that holds up in practice will show up in who ends up leasing that restaurant space, and who eats there.
Silverwood itself changed hands this spring. Herschend Family Entertainment, the Atlanta company behind Dollywood and Silver Dollar City, completed its purchase of the 400-acre park on March 27, ending more than three decades of Norton family ownership. Paul Norton, the outgoing chief operating officer, framed the decision as a matter of fit rather than money. In a statement carried by the Spokane Journal of Business, he said:
"When the time came to pass the torch, Herschend was the only choice."
For anyone bracing for the park to feel different overnight, the specifics matter more than the headline. Herschend and the Norton family both pledged full hiring continuity for the seasonal staff and confirmed there would be no changes to 2026 season pass pricing. The gates opened on schedule May 2, and the full event lineup, including Night of the Stars, Coaster Classic, Scarywood, and Boulder Beach's summer program, proceeded exactly as planned, per Prism News. For a longtime crew member like Vicky Richardson, who has put in more than 12 years at the park, that continuity was the part that mattered.
Herschend now holds 49 properties nationwide, which makes Silverwood one small piece of a much larger company. Locally, none of that changed who was pushing a grocery cart down the parade route three days later.
None of the outside money touched Saturday. Athol Daze is still organized through City Hall, still opens with a Timberlake Fire Department pancake breakfast, and still closes with a cake walk in Athol City Park. This year's addition to the lineup was two new events, a Kids Hot Wheels Race and the town's first Classic Pinup & Greaser Contest, both listed on the event's Eventbrite page. More than 300 people lined the route to watch floats, cars, and horses pass by.
Steve Greenwood has brought his family to the parade three years running and said gatherings like this matter most in small, close-knit towns. Jeremy Deline, a four-year regular, said much the same about his own kids. Neither one mentioned Silverwood's new owner or the cabins going up down the road. That's not an oversight. It's the point.
Athol absorbed a theme park sale to a 49-property national company and a $13.5 million private development, both in the same year its signature event still gets measured in a few hundred neighbors and a fire department pancake breakfast. Those aren't competing stories. The town's own growth conversation is already happening in public, too. At a February planning meeting for the city's master plan update, residents ranked local business development and infrastructure among their top priorities, according to the Athol Daily News.
What changes for someone who already lives here is mostly practical. There's a real chance to grab dinner near the park instead of driving back into town once BumbleBee's restaurant space gets leased. There's a walkway going in that will connect a cabin bed to Silverwood's gate in about a minute, something the corridor didn't have a year ago. And there's still a parade down East Highway 45 every August, run by the same volunteers, the same fire department, and the same families who show up because that's what you do here.
